pacifier and bottle dilemma

advice from anyone, whether your a mom or not, would be greatly appreciated. breanna still uses her pacifier on occasion, mostly only at nap and bedtime. she also drinks a bottle of milk in the morning, naptime and bedtime. when did you get rid of the bottle and pacifier (if you used them)? also, how did you do it? cold turkey or ease them off of it?

I anticipated this problem with Emma and so we decided at 1 year to stop bottles completely and then I stopped giving her her pacificer slowly about the same time.
Pacifier advice- If she only has a pacifier at nap and bedtime then it's a little easier to break them of the habit (that is how Emma was). First I quit giving her her paci at night and just let her cry it out because I knew that eventually she would get tired and just crash. Naptime is different because if they don't take a nap WE go crazy...right? So I kept giving her her paci during naptime as long as she was still weining off her paci at night then once she was falling asleep at night without her paci I quit giving it to her at naptime. It seemed to work pretty well. Her naptimes were really sparatic for a couple weeks but then she napped fine.
Bottle advice: We approached this TOTALLY different! I just boxed up all the bottles and said to Emma "You are a big girl and you get to have a sippy cup now" And made it like a treat for her then we said goodbye to her bottles and that was that!
But if Breanna is a little more attached then maybe you can tell her that she can only have milk in her sippy cup and water in her bottle. If she is anything like Emma about milk she will take the sippy cup and the bottle will be history!
Thats just my advice and I hope some of it is helpful. but hang in there because it's not easy. If you ever need help along the way or a pep talk call me ....seriously!
Good luck!

Oh I could write a novel on this one! Well with the bottle I got rid of it right when she turned one and it was pretty much cold turkey. She didn't drink much for a day or two and then was fine after that and never asked for it again.
I would get rid of the morning bottle first and keep the other two if they help her sleep. Then ease off one bottle feeding at a time.

The pacifier is another story!! Bryn LOVES her pacifier. I tried to break Bryn of hers last month and it was too traumatic for her and for me. I tried to let her cry it out but she would NEVER fall asleep. Then I remembered she went almost 20 hours without sleeping when we flew to Belgium so she really might never fall asleep!
SO....
If she only has it at nap and bedtime, I don't see the problem with her keeping it.
If YOU really want to, the best idea for her age that I've heard is slowly cutting off the nipple and soon they don't want it anymore.
But I personally have come to the conclusion that the pacifier is Bryn's "lovey" so to speak. She doesn't have a doll or blankie that she is attached to. This is her source of comfort and she is too young to understand why I'm taking it away.
So for now it stays. But ONLY when she's in the crib. I will try again when she's closer to 3 and reason with her. I think it will be easier for everyone then. There really is no medical reason to take it away unless it is doing damage to her teeth.
Also there are lots of ideas online if you just google it. :)

Slip a Paci-Plushie (www.paciplushies.com) over the ring handle of her pacifier, then cut the ring off and give let her sleep with the stuffed animal by itself.

Dillon used just the bottle and decided to not ever take the binky. When we dicided to get him off the bottle we had given him sippy cups so that he could still have some thing he could hold and get some thing to drink. We actually just took it away alittle at a time putting only certian things to drink in sippys and milk/formula in bottles, then we just took them away cold trukey and he has been fine ever since.

I wish I had some advice for you, but I am still a novice! I love the BW/color pic of Breanna though!

kinley never had a bottle so i have no advice for that. and as the pacifier goes Kinley is still addicted to hers. she LOVES it and cries for it like crazy! her doctor told me the best time to get rid of it is when she turns 2 and she is old enough to understand that she can trade in her pacifier for a toy she really wants. i'll let youknow how it goes! not looking forward to it.

Well, Paige never took a pacifier or a bottle. She refused. So I'm no help. But believe me, I've got some parenting problems. Paige just started sleeping in her crib THIS WEEK. Yeah, that's right. She's been sleeping with us for a YEAR! Its been pure hell teaching her to sleep alone, but I know it will be worth it.

Jocelyn still takes a bottle and screams if I don't give her one. I found some awesome soft top sippy's that the spout is in the middle and has been a great transition. I plan on taking all bottles away when she turns 2 (in Oct.). I didn't see the rush to do it beforehand since it was a great comfort to her. I would feel the same way about the binkie. They're still babies!!!
